Kindergarten - Grade One Lesson Idea
One of the BC prescribed learning outcomes (PLO) for social studies in both Kindergarten and Grade 1 is to identify a variety of ways of communicating by presenting information using oral or visual representation. We thought that this would be taught well through dance. Gumboot dancing originated in South Africa as a way to communicate by stomping your gumboots and clapping your hands in different patterns. We thought for this lesson the teacher could show students a couple of YouTube videos as an example of what gumboot dancing looks like. We have provided a few videos below that could be used. We thought that after the videos it would be fun to for students to create their own gumboot dances using some of the moves they watched or come up with their own. Perhaps the students could bring their gumboots to school and try some moves in their own gumboots (if they have them). Through this lesson students will learn about a different culture as well as covering the social studies PLO of learning about different ways to communicate.
